The Raid: Redemption

Huge fight scene with a bunch of weapons in an urban environment.  A nice mix of impact and edged weapons as well.  Not sure if this is available on DVD yet but I think someone mentioned that they already watched this... either way - enjoy!

The Strongest Man in the World - and You

The strongest man in the world (at least one of them) has something in common with other Powerlifters, elite Military personnel, world-class athletes, top-tier martial artists, and soccer moms - Russian Kettlebells.  It doesn't matter is you are picking up a 1,000 pound bar or a bag of groceries at Giant, you need to have the ballistic hip extension and mobility that Kettlebells develop.  Listen, I can't pick up a 1,000 pound bar, and I'm guessing you can't either, but you don need healthy hips, a strong posterior chain, and the mobility to get up and down without help.

Take a tip from Andy Bolton, one of the strongest men in the world, and do your Kettlebell Swings and Turkish Get ups!

The Biggest Movie Event of 2012

Love them or hate them Christopher Nolan's Batman movies have redefined the public's perception of the Dark Knight.  This installment, "The Dark Knight Rises", is set eight years after the previous story and finds Batman retired and Gotham thriving.  With the introduction of Bane and Catwoman into the mix Batman must once again put on the cape and cowl and rise to the challenge.

Based on the trailers and pre-opening buzz this is going to be an amazing experience.

Clean Up Your Diet and Clean Up Your Life

There are a handful of books that are a permanent part of my library; books that I refer to on a regular basis as well as re-read again and again from cover to cover.  These are books that have changed my perception and have spurred me to change my training methodology and mindset.  It Starts With Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig now joins the ranks of The Tao of Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee), The Filipino Martial Arts (Dan Inosanto), Enter the Kettlebell (Pavel Tsatsouline), Movement (Gray Cook), Starting Strength (Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore) and Core Performance (Mark Verstegan) as books that are required reading for anyone who wants to rise from the average to the elite.

It Starts With Food will give you the information and insights that will allow you to make life and performance altering changes to how you look at and consume food.  If you have yet to purchase this book - do it now – and start benefiting from this groundbreaking look at food and life unchained from poor nutritional choices!

Balintawak Master Flow

If you are going to attend the Guro Dan Inosanto seminar this weekend at the Trident Academy of MMA you are going to see this training flow from Balitawak Eskrima.  Called the "mother" or "master" flow it is the foundation for the system and it gives the practitioner a solid foundation for countering strikes at medium and close range.  Enjoy watching Guro Dan and GM Atillo drill this flow and several variations.

A Quick Guro Dan Cameo

I remember Guro Dan mentioning that he ramped Rob Schneider up for this role but never did see the end result.  Enjoy the fight scene and wait for Guro Dan to pop in the last seconds! :)

More with Guro Dan Inosanto

I have had the honor of being a student of Guro Dan Inosanto for over two decades and every single time I spend time with him I learn something new.  His knowledge and comprehension of the combative arts is both awe inspiring and humbling and I cherish the knowledge and insights that he has passed on to me.  If you have a chance to train with you will be a better martial artist for it...

MK Movie Night: The Man with the Iron Fists

Not sure if any of you are fans of Quentin Tarantino but I am and I'm excited to see him coming out with another martial arts themed move: "The Man with the Iron Fists".  It has a great cast (Russel Crowe and Lucy Liu) as well as slew of amazing stuntmen and women (many from the Inosanto Academy).  Check out the following trailer and tell me you don't want to get in on this!

Michael Jai White on Punching

Michael Jai White does an excellent job of explaining Bruce Lee's concept of the direct hit; no telegraphing, no loading, just straight power, speed and penetration.

CrossFit and Combatives

Since I started using kettlebells over a decade ago I tried to impress upon all of my students (and teachers) how important a tool they are in developing not only the physical but mental strength.  After starting CrossFit over five years ago I feel that the combination (kettlebells and CrossFit) are essential to the martial artist if he ever thinks he will have to actually apply the combative skills they are developing.  The following video features Kelly Starrett (of Mobility WOD) and in it he explains eloquently his reasons for looking at combatives as an integral part of the CrossFit experience.
